History & Mission (K)

our story

On March 16, 1994, the Willie Mae Mitchell Community Opportunity Center was established as a community-based youth organization. On Nov. 21, 2001, the organization was accepted into the membership of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and was renamed the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Texas (BGCSCT).

Since its inception, the BGCSCT has proudly served the youth of Caldwell, Comal, Guadalupe and Hays counties. BGCSCT provides children with a safe place to learn and grow, provide ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals, offer life-enhancing programs and character development experiences, and hope and opportunity for all members.

BGCSCT is a public, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization located in San Marcos, Texas. One of the BGCSCT’s most unique features is that it is one of only two Clubs in the United States that operate a charter school.  BGCSCT is fortunate to have two charter schools, Texas Preparatory School – San Marcos and Texas Preparatory School – Austin, which implements BGC programs and operates according to the BGCSCT mission. While TPS – San Marcos solely operates as a traditional BGC after school program, the Austin campus, Texas Preparatory School – Austin’s after school program is ROOTS (Raising Our Own to Succeed) Austin.
